Keep Bears Wild

1.      Never leave garbage or pet and livestock food out overnight unless it is in a bear-resistant container

2.  We do not recommend hanging birdfeeders in bear country

  • However, if you would like to hang a birdfeeder please put it out in December when the birds actually need the food and the bears are asleep and take down in March when the bears wake up

  • Hang bird feeders at least 10’ off the ground and 4’out from any pole or tree

  • Use a catch plate and clean the ground daily

  • Bring bird feeders in at night

3.  Keep BBQ grills in secured location

4.  Install electric fencing around known available attractants, such as garbage, grain, fruit trees, gardens, livestock, and compost piles

Know how to tell the Difference between Grizzlies and Black Bears

Head Shape- Grizzly bears have a concave (dished) profile.  Black bears have a straight profile

Ear Size and shape- Grizzly bears have smaller, rounded ears.  The ears of a black bear are more erect and pointed

Claws- Grizzly bears have long, slightly curved claws.  Black bears have shorter, curved claws

Front Paw tracks- Imagine a straight line drawn from the bottom of the big toe to the little (fifth) toe.  In grizzlies, all the toe prints will be above the line.  In black bears, half of the fifth toe will be below the line.
